Good Morning Buenos Aires

Avantgarb{age}, The Art in Wearing Trash: images by photographer Caitlin Margaret Kelly opening April 6th at ICANA Belgrano

Avantgarb{age}, The Art in Wearing Trash is the collision of photography, garbage and design where discarded items are repurposed as wearable art and transformed into highly stylized photographs. Several images from this series by photographer Caitlin Margaret Kelly will be on display at ICANA Belgrano during the month of April.

In these photographs, Kelly takes designs by Argentine artist Aidana Baldassarre and uses stark lighting and a creative post-process to accentuate the materials and the edginess of the designs. What others see as garbage to be discarded, Baldassarre sees as full of possibilities. She transforms auto tires into skirts and dresses, milk bags into pants and even neckties and old magazines into wearable art. To compliment each piece, Kelly uses textured backgrounds, crumbling walls, peeling paint and the Buenos Aires cityscape for a gritty urban environment.

The models were also chosen because they are not models or as Kelly likes to call them non-models. Men and women without modeling experience wear each piece. The purpose is twofold: to promote healthy body types and to reinforce that recycling and this art is for everyone.

The collaboration between Kelly and Baldassarre culminated in a 74-page coffee-table book. The first edition was released as print on demand, but to stay true to the message of the art and photography, they decided on a redesign. The book is scheduled to be re-released later this year in a larger 30×30 format and printed on recycled paper with processes that minimize the impact on the environment.

The photography exhibit opens April 6th with the inauguration from 19 to 21 hrs at ICANA Belgrano, 3 de Febrero 821, CABA and runs through April 29th, 9 to 19hrs.

ICANA, Instituto Cultural Argentino Norteamericano, (, is a nonprofit which promotes educational and cultural interchanges between Argentina and the United States.

To cover the cost of the exhibit, Kelly is offering images of the show, note cards, as well as images from her collection in exchange for pledges. You can view the full description and rewards via the project page on Kickstarter:
